Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father's departure, the Ford family was taken care of by her mom, grandmother and godparents. As a child, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to associations with words. Ford became fascinated by acting during her teenaged years, and joined the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of days, she concluded that this school wasn't for her. Ford was then able to apply to be a student at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring in Doctor Who. Ford was able to graduate in 1993. She already made a TV appearance in a 1992 episode of Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Alongside her usual theatre work, Tate joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. However, Tate quickly began gaining notice for her stand-up comedy and added stand-up comedy to her resume in the year 1996.
